I'm not sure what the wood is but it is hand carved. The lotus is sort of a symbol for the spiritual quest. The exquisite beauty of this flower grows out of the most filthy, stagnant water. Like wise man can elevate him self from the most base of circumstances and achieve spiritual perfection. Quite a wise door!
